Pro-Tec to the Rescue!
Easy 6 miles @ 8:00 pace on treadmill/ Pilates
The weather outside is ALMOST perfect for running- low humidity, temperatures in the low 60’s. The crazy wind, however, is not my cup of tea! I was tempted to run outside today, but decided it’s best to stick with my 2 days outside, 4-5 days on the tready to keep my knee from hating me. Not sure if this is actually helping, but it can’t be hurting so I’ll keep at it. My treadmill run today went pretty good. The knee is less sore than it was yesterday. Pilates was OK. We did more hip stuff today so I didn’t get as good of an ab workout. That’s OK though… I did some more core work after my run 🙂
I mentioned a few weeks back that I received 2 knee braces from the wonderful people at Pro-Tec Athletics. Well, I have worn both braces multiple times and want to give you guys and gals the 411 on these products. SO, here we go!
I’ll start with the Patellar Tendon Strap. This baby has become my new best friend! I was a little skeptical at first. I’ve seen runners out there dawning this band and I always thought it was pointless. I. Was. Wrong. <- Relish that statement. I don’t admit it often, haha. I tried it first on an easy treadmill run and it took some adjusting and getting used to during the run. I wasn’t sure if I had it on too lose, then too tight?! I still have to tinker with it a bit, but I think I’ve found that sweet spot. I put a good 45 miles in wearing it, with 24 of those being super sweaty outside miles. I wanted to see if the dried sweat would cause it to stink or chafe. It passed the test- it did neither. I did however wash it (by hand with a mild soap) and let it air dry before my 18 miler. That was by far my sweatiest run and it didn’t chafe ONE BIT! I didn’t even use body glide on it. I give the Patellar Tendon Strap a 10 out of 10 and highly recommend it to any one with chondromalacia (runner’s knee) type knee issues.
Onto the Gel-Force Knee Support Brace. I tried tried tried to make this work while running, but it just didn’t happen. The first time I used it I was going to do an easy 4 miler on the treadmill. Nope. I made it about a mile, barely. There is definitely a lot of support, but for me, it is too big to run in. I can’t let all that awesome support go to waste though! I have been wearing it during my walks with Riley. She pulls occasionally to catch a lizard and when I’m 100%, I don’t really notice it, but ever since my knee injury, this little pull can knock my alignment off balance (note- she doesn’t knock ME off balance) and I feel a bit sore after. Like, more so than after a run. Weird, I know. Wearing this more supportive brace has really helped me in this area! This makes both me AND Riley happy campers! For running, I give this a 4 out of 10. BUT, for all other aspects of life I give it an 8 out of 10. You can’t really wear it under your clothes but anything you do around the house or while wearing active gear, this brace definitely helps!
