Saturday: Rest

Sunday: FL Holiday Halfathon 13.1 at Maderia Beach

Recap Below.

******

This Holiday Season has been anything but normal! With Todd being gone and me leaving soon for Asia, I’ve done little to no decorating for Christmas. No tree, no knick knacks, no lights on the house. So what’s a girl to do when she won’t be home to celebrate but loves Christmas?! Why run a Holiday race of course! And to make it even better, Melissa was running it, too! Twins on the run! (For newish readers, she’s not really my twin, hehe)

Of course we had to dress the part, wearing our red and green! Per my usual race day luck, the weather was sub-par. Of course the day before and day after were good, but race day? Not so much. Can a girl catch a freakin brake?

halfathon forecastI drove to Melissa’s and we rode together to the race. I had oatmeal around 6. The race started at 7:30- a bit late if you ask me. Once we arrived to packet pick up, we grabbed our stuff and headed to the bathroom where Melissa took my fierce photo 🙂

The starting line was great. Plenty of porta potties… always a plus for this lady. There were so many people dressed up in Santa/Elf/Red & Green outfits. We did a quick warm up and snapped one last pic before heading to the start…

Melissa made the bows below for us to wear. Super cute and perfectly fit the holiday theme!

So I realize that this post is all over the place in terms of the day’s timeline, but bare with me… me mind is going in a million directions right now. OK so, the actual race… It was VERY windy at the start. My plan going into the race was to try and PR (under 1:31) and depending on how I felt, go from there. Seeing as I ran the Space Coast Marathon 2 weeks ago, I didn’t have high hopes. I started out at a 7ish pace, drafting off a group of guys, but after about 2 miles I just wasn’t feeling it. To PR I needed to be hitting 6:50 miles and since that wasn’t happening, I decided to not ride the pain train and just enjoy the race and get a good workout. During the race, I took Gatorade twice. There were 3 decent hills and the finish was around a lake on a trail/sand like surface which was interesting.

I finished in 1:37:23, a 7:26 pace. Nothing to write home about, but not too bad either. I was hoping to at least place in my age group, but nope. I think I placed 5th. I received this race entry for free and didn’t know I’d be running it until AFTER my 12 miler on Thursday. NOT how I usually go into a race and I think that played a part with my pace, too. Melissa however, kicked ass! She PRed by 17 minutes! Dropping her time to 2:03 and change. What?! I am so proud and happy for her! We wore our medals with pride 🙂

The course was point to point. This was welcomed by me after just running Space Coast, which consists of 2 out and backs. I really liked that you ran through different scenery. The first part was on the main strip in Maderia Beach, then through some neighborhoods and finishing on the Pinellas Trail. There weren’t too many spectators, but I’m used to that and it didn’t make much of a difference. Although I did miss my cheering entourage 😉

The medals were great! I love the ribbon and ornament like medal! The post race food was perfect. They had pasta (alfredo and red sauce), bananas, croissants, very yummy cookies and mini red velvet cupcakes, pretzels, chocolate milk, soda, beer and of course water. I’m not gonna lie, I ate WAY too much. I definitely ate more than after my marathon, but I never have much of an appetite after 26.2. I usually eat more the next day after a marathon. I continued my over indulgence at my parents house in the afternoon. Whateves… I kept telling myself, You’ll be in Asia soon and won’t have any of this food so eat up, haha.

Ya, you read that right… I’m leaving for Asia soon and my posts will certainly be more sporadic. However, they WILL be pretty cool and I hope to update you whenever we have Wi-Fi. Gah! I can’t wait to see Todd!!! Please please please keep reading, as I’ll be back on a regular blogging schedule when I return! (Yes, that was me begging.) Hope everyone had a great weekend 🙂

  1. A half TWO WEEKS after your full… girl you crazy! Congratulations on another great race 🙂 But super jealous about the free race entry haha I am looking to plan out my spring/summer races, but this college girl cannot afford to do all of them!

    • Races can be so expensive! Hence why I jumped at the chance to run one for free. I usually only end up doing a few a year. Just pick your fave ones and save up!
