Saturday Spectating and Sunday Thanksgiving
Friday: 6 miles @ 8:00 pace on trail
Saturday: 6 miles @ 8:20 pace on treadmill
Sunday: 6 miles @ 8:18 pace on treadmill
Can you tell my new go to distance? haha.
My parents have always been my biggest supporters, especially in athletics. They spent countless afternoon/evenings driving my sister to and from soccer practice, gave up too many weekends and holidays to drive us around FL for tournaments and games. Not to mention the emotional side of winning/losing and the physical ailments that came along with what can be a rough sport. I haven’t played competitive soccer since high school, so thankfully, they got a bit of a break…
That is, until I started running, haha. Since then, their support has made a comeback. They always put a smile on my face when I see them on the trail, pushing through a tough workout. I get a card from them wishing me good luck before every race. They put up with my general running craziness. My mom makes me whatever I want as a post run treat or recovery foods when I just don’t feel like cooking… (like this macaroni!) And most recently, my mom came to support me at the Space Coast Marathon while Todd was in Taiwan.
This weekend was The Gasparilla Distance Classic in Tampa and my parents do the 5k every year. I thought it was about time I repay the support card, so Todd and I headed out Saturday morning to surprise them with a cheer squad! We stood on a bridge (which you can see in the background of the pic below) to cheer them on around mile 1 and then again where I’m standing, about mile 2.8…
They both PRed, despite the warm SUPER humid weather. They were so surprised to see us, and I can only hope it helped push them along during their race, knowing we were waiting at the finish. I know that always helps me!
Side note- SO many people came up to me saying, “Ragnar!” I love that I’m a part of that community now 🙂 OK, back to my parents! It started raining, so they grabbed a banana and we headed into the convention center to roam around the expo (and get free samples of course!), hoping the rain would stop. Once it did, we got a great shot of them in front of the pirate ship…
The wonderful race atmosphere makes me want to train and race NOW! haha. No can do though. There is a bigger picture. I just have to keep reminding myself of that! Tonight (Sunday) we went to my parents for a mock Thanksgiving. Since Todd was also in Taiwan during Thanksgiving, he never really got to celebrate and since I’m all about the stuffing, I was more than down for another turkey dinner 🙂 My mom baked up the most moist turkey ever, better than the one we had on actual Thanksgiving.
Instead off “all the fixings” we stuck with a veggie (roasted green beans) and carb (stuffing, duh!) with a couple glasses of wine. Don’t worry, I went back for seconds 🙂
And what’s a holiday without dessert? One of my extended family’s favorite desserts is Cherry Yum Yum. My cousins, who have moved away, kill for it every year around Thanksgiving and Christmas time. Since we had just had my mom’s most delicious chocolate cake for Valentines Day, we decided on this family classic…
Cherry Yum Yum is kind of like a lighter, layer cheesecake. The bottom layer is a butter and graham cracker crumb crust. Then comes half the mixture of cream cheese, sugar, dream whip mix (not the same as cool whip) and milk, topped by cherry pie filling, the rest of the cream cheese mixture and a few more crumbs. Delish! I’ll probably post this picture on Facebook to make my cousins jealous, haha. I’m so nice.
There were seconds of this, too. I have such a hard time with portion control on “holidays,” or any time really, haha . It’s a good thing I run. Anyways, I’m glad we were able to spend some QT (quality time) my with parents this weekend. Todd even played racquetball with my dad today. I also need to give a shout out to my girl Jillian, who also ran in Gasparilla this weekend, except she ran her first half marathon. She knocked it outta the park and I couldn’t be more happy for her! Congrats Girl! Hope everyone had a great weekend 🙂
Do you celebrate missed holidays?
