4th of July Fun!

Thursday/Friday: 5k race

Saturday: 2 miles

I had the most awesome opportunity through work this week. Not only did I get to run in a race, but I got to work the pre-race event and get paid, (read- I got paid to run, hang out a race and talk running with other racers). The run was at night, the 5k being at 11:35PM and the 10K at 12:15AM. The only thing that would’ve made it better would have been being able to actually race it and not just (barely) run it.

Let me explain… this was only my fourth run since being cleared to run again and my first run outside in about 4 months. Needless to say, I was NOT prepared for the heat and humidity. It rained a bit before the race, making the air even more gross. At least I had My Fast Friend, Christina with me! Her and her boo Andrew kept me pumped up and ready to run! I even saw Pam and her husband, Deron! In poor blogger form, I forgot to get a pic with them.

We wore some fun stars and stripes bandannas to celebrate the 4th of July. Looking hot! I ran my PW (personal worst), haha, 5k time of 26:46, which is an 8:37 pace. I really wanted to run an 8:30, but all things considered, I’m happy with my time and pace. Christina had a tempo run that morning and still was able to place 1st in our age group! What a baller. Andrew even got a 2 second PR. That’s a power couple right there πŸ™‚ We had to stick around for quite a while after our race for the 10kers to finish and by the time I got home and showered off real quick, I didn’t get to bed until 3AM!

I woke up around 7:15AM and seriously felt like I had a hangover! I got up and chugged some water before trying to go back to sleep. I was obviously dehydrated. It’s funny because I told Christina I’d bring some Nuun and then totally forgot πŸ™ I KNOW that would have helped a ton! Friday, July 4th, we just hung out and had a pretty relaxing day.

For dinner we grilled out. Burgers, corn and ASPARAGUS! It has been $4.99/lb for the longest time, and I just can’t justify spending that much, so I was elated when I saw it on sale at Publix!

Something you may not know about me… I’m a corn Nazi and have to have every kernel eaten off the cob. Every. One. This usually means that I take Todd’s “finished” corn and actually finish it off.

IMAG2176Corn’s just too good to waste! After dinner, we were supposed to meet up with Christina and Andrew to watch fireworks, but the weather wasn’t cooperating and it poured all evening. So, we watch 40 Year Old Virgin with my parents. Random, I know. They had never seen it and we forgot how vulgar parts of it can be, haha. They thought it was pretty funny, though.

My dad is so tan and we make him look so small, haha. My mom made a peach and blueberry galette Β for desert, so we enjoyed that with some ice cream for dessert during the movie.

Also during the movie, we were trying to calm a couple of scared doggies!

scareddogs.jpgThey kept pacing from one person to the next to get pet. They even gave each other a few kisses πŸ™‚ At one point, they were barking like crazy at one of the pops from the fireworks. They were so loud! I’m glad we were there to calm them down. Overall, it was a pretty good 4th of July! I got a fun race in with friends, and spent time with the fam- as my dad would say, you can’t beat that with a stick! Hope you had a great 4th as well πŸ™‚

  1. So fun!! I love those bandanas you were wearing and a run outside!! Awesome!! You are so fast. I know you don’t you are right now but I would die to be that fast!! πŸ™‚ You will get back to it!!! Sad that it was raining!! It is usually raining here on the 4th but it was actually really nice!!!

    • Glad you guys had some nice weather πŸ™‚
I wanted to wear something patriotic since we had to wear our neon yellow work race tops, so the bandannas did the trick!
Thanks about the pacing. I know it’s not a bad pace, I just couldn’t get over how out of shape I felt, haha. I know I’ll get back into my groove soon. I’m just happy to be running!

  2. You are so fast…your worst time is one of my best. πŸ™‚ The heat and humidity are ridiculous to deal w/ while running. I think you did great!

    • Thanks, Jan! The heat/humidity really are a killer! They make an “easy run” feel like hard work! A think a little more sodium that day would’ve helped.
