LAST Saturday, I ran in the Tampa Police Memorial 5k with Melissa. It was a great event to honor the fallen police officers in Tampa. It started in front of the Tampa Police Department, where there is a really cool memorial…

Tampa Police MemorialRight before the start, a deputy sang the National Anthem while two officers repelled down the side of the building with the flag. So cool.

The course was mainly on Bayshore, a road that is commonly used for races in our area, like the ever popular Gasparilla Distance Classic that my parents ran last year and was my first 1/2 marathon years ago 🙂 It also has the longest continuous sidewalk in the world at 4.5 miles. Anyways… there is no shade on Bayshore and it was hot and sunny with an 8AM start. Yes, I know, FL hadn’t gotten the memo that it’s fall yet.

FITniche boothMy only goal for this race was to beat my time from the Thin Mint Race that I did in September. Have I trained or done any speedwork? No. OK, maybe once I ran a few half mile intervals at 7:30 pace, but only once. My time in that race was 24:11 (7:45 pace).

Police Memorial BibWell my friends, not only did I beat my time, I placed 2nd in my age group (hence the two medals) with a time of 23:21 (7:30 pace.) Woo hoo! I may not be fast anymore, but at least I can still be a few people 😉 All my “hard work” deserved a plateful of yumminess…

Columbia Restaurant Post Race

It’s hard to see all of the deliciousness, but there’s black beans and rice and Cuban bread from the Columbia Restaurant (the best Spanish food in Tampa) as well as a few chocolate chip cookies. So. Good. I know Todd’s jealous he didn’t get some 🙂

Melissa and I were also treated to a free post race massage. A lot of races offer these and it’s awesome to be able to take advantage of it. It really helps recovery, in my opinion, just like compression socks. PRO Compression has a new totally rad Sock of the Month out…

  1. I love how you consider 7:30 miles “not fast.” But really I don’t love it because then it makes me feel SLOW AS MOLASSES! Honestly though I know what you’re saying, and we all know what we are capable of so I get it! Regardless, 7:30 miles ARE fast and you got SECOND!! BOOYA!

    • 7:30 is speedy, but not as fast as I want 😉 I know you understand and aren’t offended… it’s all relative. Plus, I could never climb mountains like you!

  2. I’m so look happy for you for both beating your previous time and your placing in the race. And yes, I’ve run that “longest sidewalk” many times and had my heart broken at gasparilla, maybe just maybe I’ll get some redemption this February … at least a little. And finally I so wish Florida would get the memo that fall has begun haha! Tomorrow morning I’m hoping to scope out the course for my next race.

    • Thanks, I was pretty happy, too! Hope the course for your next race was killer. Looks like we’ll have another mini cold front next weekend. Cross your fingers!

  3. Fantastic work! That is awesome that you show support for the fallen officers, and I love them rappelling down the building with the flag. Great pace!
