Friday Favorites: Protein Baby
Happy Friday! It’s been a pretty hectic week for me. Between getting back from Australia, celebrating my birthday, getting caught up with work, getting a car and meeting up with friends, I’ve been go go go. I can’t really complain, as I like to stay busy, but that means I’ve gone almost another whole week without blogging. Seems like I’m stuck in a rut with a one a week post.
I may or may not have mentioned it on here, but I’ve been trying to keep my protein up through out pregnancy. We all know I love my carbs: pancakes, bagels, fresh bread, pasta, cake/cookies, you name it. With less cardio overall in my workouts, I’ve tried to balance out that marathoner’s mindset of eating all the carbs.
Insert Great Low Carb Bread Company. They make awesome breads and sweets with added protein and (obviously) lower carbs. I got to try a few of their products. The Pumpkin Spice Bread– perfect since I’m all about the Pumpkin- was delicious. I used it to make french toast, toasted it with butter, but mostly just ate it straight outta the package. With 60 calories, 8 carbs (only 1 if you take the 7g fiber into account) and 7 grams of protein, you can’t go wrong!The Pumpkin Spice Muffin was just as good! 50 cals, 22 carbs (3 net with the fiber) and 12!!! grams of protein. I could’ve used a little more pumpkin spice, but the flavor was still there and the texture was much better than other protein muffins I’ve had. The Low Carb Low Fat Chocolate Brownie was the bomb! Again, 55 cals, 22 carbs (3 net with the fiber) and 12!!! grams of protein in that bad boy. The products come frozen, so after letting it thaw in the fridge, I microwaved it for 20 seconds and it was chocolatey bliss. The texture was perfect and I didn’t know I was eating a healthy brownie. Seriously. Super impressed with the texture of all three products, which says a lot!Not only are the products delicious, but I can’t say enough about the company and people. They are helpful and answer any questions you may have. Check out their site and let me know what you think 🙂 I really want to try their BAGELS!
My other favorite for protein lately has been Elli Quark. From the website: Elli Quark is a spoonable FRESH CHEESE with a creamy texture similar to Greek yogurt, but with a richer,LESS SOUR taste. It also has a better protein-to-carb ratio than Greek yogurt, with HIGH PROTEIN and NO ADDED SUGARS or artificial sweeteners.
They have 12 flavors and they are all awesome. My faves seem to be the fruit flavors and those have little chunks or pieces of the fruit in it, which I like… it’s not sugary fruit liquid on the bottom, it’s already mixed in and not gross, haha.Each container has 80 calories, 6g net carbs and 14 grams of protein. I love those stats! It’s less sweet than normal yogurt and doesn’t have that fake flavor taste that other 80 calorie greek yogurts have. The texture is super creamy and overall, I just really enjoy it- so does the baby 😉
Of course I’ve been getting my protein in through salads, too. This week I didn’t feel like food prepping much after getting back from Australia on Saturday, so I hit up the work salad bar a few times and loaded up with chicken and all the goodness.I also picked up a few bags of Quest Protein Chips for the plane ride. I only ended up eating one on the plane, as they had plenty of food throughout the 14 hour flight. The other I had at the hotel. I tried the regular and the cheddar & sour cream and was actually quite surprised that I liked them a lot! The cheddar was much better. 120 cals, 21g protein. I liked that they are a crunchy/savory form of portable protein.So those are my foodcentric Friday Favorites. I’m hoping to try out some protein added nut butters, but they are SO EXPENSIVE!
