Cairns, Australia

Our trip to Australia started in Sydney. You can read about that HERE.

Cairns was a beautiful city. It’s pretty touristy though, as many people stay there because its close to the Great Barrier Reef… which is why we went there 😉 Our first day there, we walked around and took in the small city, or should I say town. On the second day we took a snorkeling tour of the Great Barrier Reef. Sounds awesome right?!?!

Unless you’re the pregnant girl who didn’t know she’d get horrible sea sickness and throw up the entire 5.5 hour trip. I barely made it 30 minutes in until I started feeling nauseous. The first leg out was a little over an hour, but thankfully we anchored and there was a land strip I could go to and feel a bit better. I was given a mens large wet suit to fit over the bump, lol. I WAS able to snorkel for about 15 minutes, but then started to feel bad again.

We left the dry land  and it was all down hill for me. Me, Todd and few other people on the trip agreed that snorkeling in the Keys is more colorful. That made me feel a bit better since I spent almost the whole trip puking. It was seriously one of the top 5 worst days of my life and Todd felt horrible that there was nothing he could do to make me feel better. I was just happy that I actually snorkeled on the Great Barrier Reef!

Cairns Bats

The next day, we went on a rain forest tour. It started in the later afternoon, when we saw a TON of bats in the trees. You’d never know they were there unless pointed out. Our next stop was just along a neighborhood road where there were tons of wallabies. Can you see the babies coming out of two of their pouches?

Along the fence were these green ants and the tour guide said that if you licked them they’d taste like citrus. Of course I tried it and it did in deed taste citrusy!Licking Ant

Once we got to the rain forest there was a lot to see. There were crazy strong vines that the guys swung on like Tarzan and the girls swung on like a swing! It was really cool.

We grabbed dinner and waited for night to fall. Most of the animals and creatures in their rain forest come out at night. Top left: can you see the “two headed” lizard? Top right: Bushtail Possum. Bottom Left: Brown possum. Bottom Right: scary spider! Not really though. It was fun walking around in the pitch black trying to find scurrying animals. There were a few we saw the we weren’t able to catch on camera- shucks!

We stayed in Cairns for three days before heading to Melbourne, where we took it easy. I’ll do my next Australia post on the yummy food!

Happy Friday Friends!

    • Oh man… 28 hrs of driving?! I was 28 weeks on the flight out and 29 on the way back.. it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be though!

    • Ya, it was the worst, haha. I think diving would be better than snorkeling if you ever- I mean WHEN, you get the chance 🙂
