Marathon Training has Begun!

I’ve chosen my “comeback” marathon… The Towpath Marathon in Akron, OH on October 9th. It runs through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park in the fall and everyone says it’s beyond beautiful! I haven’t registered yet, as I want to make sure I can balance training, working and most importantly, family.

Family Time

I plan on following Jack Daniels’s plan like I’ve done in the past with a lot of success. It will most certainly be challenging, especially training during the summer in FL, but I’m up for the challenge. My goal for peak mileage is 60 miles, but I have a feeling 50 will be more attainable with my other priorities. Thankfully my job is pretty flexible and I can come in later some days, so that should help.

I had THE CRAPPIEST run last Sunday and it was a huge reminder that I need to start doing all the little things again; extra stretching, foam rolling, core work, etc. The main things I need to focus on are hydration, fuel and sleep. I think my run was so horrible because a) it was super hot and humid, b) I wasn’t hydrated enough and c) I was running on little sleep. Usually when I pump I drink a full glass of water while doing so. I haven’t been doing that before my early morning runs because who wants to run with 12 oz of water in their stomach? I think I need to start attempting to and getting my body used to water sloshing in my tummy- sounds fun.

Thankfully, this Sunday (yesterday) I had a great redemption run and did 12 miles at an 8:24 pace. I drank a full glass of Nuun while pumping and I really think that helped. #nuunlife


The fueling part is the easiest. Although I’m still having a hard time losing the baby weight. I’m too afraid of dropping my calories too low and therefore make excuse to eat more, haha. Whateves because YOLO. But seriously, I’m trying to make sure the food I eat is healthy and fueling my running, not just crap. Pumping and Pancakes = Multitasking at it’s finest. You need #allthecarbs after a sweaty long run.

So there ya have it… my comeback marathon plans. Bare with me as I try to juggle many hats and do them all to the best of my ability. I’m sure I’ll stumble a few times, but hey, that makes it interesting right?! That’s just what I’ll tell myself, haha. I’m excited to be back into the groove of things and make “Heather Run Fast” a thing again 😉

  1. Yay that’s great to hear you’ve found your fall race! And it’s one close to me! Enjoy training- good luck hydrating- and please share any tips for new moms running along the way.

    • Will do! As of right now, I’d say my biggest tip is hydration- especially if you’re breastfeeding!

  2. Bahahha the pumping and pancakes picture is awesome! I definitely agree that calories in/out is so much harder to figure out when nursing!!

    • There’s just no way to know and it’s not worth going too low and risking it. I plug that pump in wherever I can to get stuff done, haha

  4. Yay on the Fall race!! Excited to follow your training. Sorry you had to have a tough reminder to stay hydrated while pumping. I remember, how draining it is (not meaning to be literal, ha!) and I think the nuun is an even better idea for you than water considering training and summer heat. Congrats on the ambassadorship!! Well deserved!

    • Thanks, Kris 🙂 I’m hoping to get this hydration in check and figure out the whole work 40 hrs, family time and running thing. Should be interesting!

    • Kara seems to like to pool so far. She doesn’t really giggle in it yet, so I think she’s still getting comfortable but she doesn’t cry or fussy, so that’s good!
